only the numbers 1,1,1 which I am still not sure correspond to, be my guest and take a look and see if you can figure the
second set of numbers out!

I believe
this to be the John and Agnes mentioned in the 1861 Hespeler census:
Family
folklore says that John disappeared and ended up in Pennsylvania, but I think it was Albany,NY.
I also found whom I believe to be Robert from Galt living in Albany as well.
In 1861 there was a census done in Hespeler,
the copy I received contained the following Picken members recorded as living in Hespeler at the time:
#27 John Picken shoemaker, born in Scotland, U.P. , age 47 next B-day , Married
#28 Agnes Picken no occupation listed, born in Scotland,
U.P., age 44 next B-day, Married
#36 Robert Picken no occupation listed, born in U.C., no religion listed, age next B-day 8.

Here is information on the first President of the board of the United
Way of Galt:
William Wylie
Wilkinson
The first President of the Board in 1940 was William Wylie Wilkinson(1867-1945).
He was born in Galt; the son of Robert Wilkinson attended Marion Picken.
Wilkinson attended primary school in Galt, later attended a school in Hamilton and finished up his education at the Galt Collegiate Institute.
Upon graduation he entered the dry goods firm of Wilkinson and Mickleborough, which was
later taken over by his father. In 1894, upon the retirement of his father, Mr. Wilkinson took control of the business
that was then operated as W.W. Wilkinson &Co. and sold it in 1929 in order to retire. Wilkinson sat as a director on
the Boards of many organizations including the Gore Mutual Fire Insurance Co. from 1933-1945. He also chaired the committee
that raised the funds required to build the Galt YMCA on Queen's Square in 1912.
You will notice in the reading that this man, William Wilkinson, is the son of Robert, whom Agnes Picken lived with,
I wonder what the Marion Picken school referred to has to do with our family ,if anything at all, I will investigate this.
Update: The "Marion Picken" in question is actually Marion Wilkinson, husband of Robert Wilkinson.
Marion was the daughter of John and Agnes Picken who moved to Albany.

Epidemics
|
Below is a listing of known Epidemics in Ontario. I will highlight in RED, the epedemic that I beleive took the lives
of Peter and Catherine Picken. I hope to one day obtain proof to this theory, but it could be a possible explanation
as to their early demise.
Ague
1838 - Depleted the population of Lindsay (Victoria County) by one-third
Cholera
1832 - Spread from Quebec killing almost 600 in Ontario and a total of 6000 Canadians across the country
1834 - Province-wide epidemic that lasted approx 4 months during the summer and early fall
1847-1849 "In one year alone, 1847, 'the black year of emigration,' more than 5,000 Irishmen, many sick from typhus and
cholera, landed in Cobourg and other lake ports"

Scarlet Fever
1871 - Death records show a large number of deaths from scarlet
fever in Renfrew County, especially Ross and Westmeath Townships from January through June, 1871. There must have been a severe
epidemic.
Smallpox
1635 - While smallpox first appeared in Canada in the early 1600's, 1635 was the first recorded epidemic
1755-1757 - Niagara area of Ontario plus Quebec, Montreal, & New England

dangerous version started being used in North America, but it was not required until 1885}
Typhus
1659 - First appears in Canada
1847 - The largest epidemic, brought on by the thousands upon thousands of new immigrants "In one year alone, 1847, 'the
