Huether (daughter of Louis1825-1905 Heuther, He was a native of Saxe-Weimer
in Germany and
Ernestina 1825-1882 Miller, both born in Germany
There is a record of the marriage of Alex Picken (son of Peter
Picken, born in Scotland and Catherine Fields, born in England) to Wilhelmina Huether (daughter of Louis1825-1905 Heuther
and Ernestina 1825-1882 Miller, both born in Germany) on December 28, 1886
Ludwick Huether, a German blacksmith, came to Hespeler from Albany, N.Y. in 1856
and set up business in a building at the back of the George Guenther property.
From there he moved into
a building on the north side of Queen. On March 20th, 1874 he bought a large lot on the south side and built a house and blacksmith shop
where he worked until he retired. He died Sept.8th,1905 aged 80 years, 8 mos. A son, John operated a waggon shop on the property
for a short time before moving to Morriston. Another son Frederick David, born at Albany Nov.19th, 1854 (?) learned the trade
from his father, worked for a few years for Jacob Beck (Sir Adam Beck father) at Badenand Doon before returning and spent
the rest of his life working at the Lower Mill. He died April 18th, 1928. He took
an active part in the Fire Brigade for many, many years and was a member of Municipal Council in 1887. Also appears to have
been very active in sports, baseball in particular. His blacksmithing skills were such that it was said he could fix anything
that was possible to fix. Louie (Curly), a brother of Fred's also took up his father's trade and worked at the Lower Mill
running the engines.

HUETHER, LUDWIG "LOUIS"
Another of the old pioneers has gone to join the great majority and
Hespeler on September 8, 1905 lost one of her most honoured and estimable citizens in the passing of Mr. Huether, who lived
fifty of the eighty years of his life in this town. He was a native of Saxe-Weimer in Germany and crossed the ocean when quite a young man. He lived in Albany for a short time before moving to Puslinch,
where he worked as a blacksmith for the late John Baer for about a year before entering the employ of the late Jacob Hespeler,
with whom he remained about ten years before going into business for himself in a blacksmith shop located on Queen St. about
where John Warren’s house now stands. He was in business about twenty years and having amassed a comfortable competence,
he retired to spend the remainder of his days in ease and comfort. He was married twice, his first wife being Ernestine Miller,
who he espoused in Germany and who died here about
twenty-three years ago. A couple of years later, he married Mrs. Fisher, who survives him. Of the children by the first marriage,
Mrs. C. H. Liersch predeceased him some ten years; Fred and Mrs. S. Pickin reside in Hespeler; John in Morriston; and Louis
in Victoria. Two children by his second marriage, Gustave and Maudie, reside at home. He was a consistent member of the Lutheran
Church, a life-long Conservative and a most esteemed citizen generally. The funeral was held form his residence on Queen St.
on Sunday at 1:30 to the Hespeler Cemetery for interment and was largely attended. Services were conducted by Rev. Maas of
Preston.
HUETHER, ERNESTINE (Nee Muller)
Wife of Ludwig Huether, on the 12th March 1882, at the age of 56
years and 4 months, of rheumatism. She was a pious Christian, a loyal wife and a noble mother. Peace be to her ashes and honour
to her memory.
--- Information from the death certificate: Ludwig Huether was a blacksmith
in Hespeler. Cause of death was nervous rheumatism.
HUETHER, FREDERICK DAVID
One of the oldest residents of the community passed away on Wednesday afternoon,
April 18, 1928, after an illness of some duration. He was the son of the late Ludwig Huether and was born in 1854 in Albany, NY. He came to Hespeler with his parents at the
age of two years and, with the exception of six years spent in Baden and Doon in his early married life, has been a resident
of the town (Hespeler) for nearly three quarters of a century. He learned the trade of machinist with the father of the late
Sir Adam Beck, but he was employed most of his working lifetime with the R. Forbes Co. and before that with Randall and Farr.
During the later years he has been head fireman. He has been identified with the fire brigade here for the past thirty-five
years, being chief engineer in the days when the steam engine was in vogue. He was highly respected by everyone in town. Besides
his wife, to whom he was married about fifty-three years ago, he is survived by three sons, George, Herbert, Oscar; two daughters,
Tena and Bessie, all of Hespeler; a brother, John in Morriston; Louis in BC; Gustave in Hespeler; two sisters, Mrs. Cusack
of Hespeler; and Mrs. Hunter of Tampa. The funeral is being held on Saturday at 2:30.
--- Information from the death certificate: Of Queen St. W. in Hespeler. Born
in Albany on November 19, 1853. Aged 74 years, 5
months and 30 days. Occupation - machinist in the woollen mill.
HUETHER, JOHN
Well-Known Morriston Merchant Passes
For more than fifty-three years a prominent resident of Morriston, where he
operated a general store, on Friday, May 29,1936, after an illness which had kept him in bed for over eight weeks. He was
born in Hespeler 76 years ago. He had been superintendent of the Sunday School of the Morriston Evangelical Church for thirty-eight
years. For over seventeen years he was the church organist. The late Mr Huether filled a number of civic positions during
his long residence in Morriston. He was at one time a justice of the peace. He was a member, also of the Cemetery Board. Two
years ago, he and Mrs. Huether celebrated their golden wedding anniversary. Surviving are his widow, Mary Martin; three sons, Lawrence of Hamilton; William F. of Puslinch; and Albert
J. of Morriston; a brother, Lewis of Victoria; a half-brother, Gus of Hespeler; and half-sister Margaret, who is living in
the U.S. He also leaves nine grandchildren. The funeral took place from his residence on Sunday. A short service was held
at the house at 2 and the cortege proceeded to the Evangelical Church, where the services were held at 2:30. Mrs. Weeks sang
"One by One": and the Sunday School children sang "What a Friend we have in Jesus." Rev. Grenzebach conducted the services.
Interment was made in Crown Cemetery. Pallbearers were John Fahrner, John Penrice, John McNaughton, Ben Wyse, John Winer and
Charlton Telfer. The six boys of his Sunday School class who carried the floral tributes were Lewis Gregor, Harvey Smith,
George Kitchen, Bruce Wyse, Jim Culp and Carl Grenzebach.
"She was going to Galt with my
uncle Ernie (Aunt Florence’s husband) when they where hit by a train at the foot of the hill going into Galt".
(This is a quote from Albert.S. Picken
in regards to what happened one tragic night to his uncle and grandmother Ernie Smith and Wilhelmine and his Aunt Florence.)
Attached is an article that appeared in
the July
18, 1923 issue of the Galt Daily Reporter reporting the death of Wilhelmina Picken:
Apparently, Alexander kept much to himself
after the tragic accident of his wife, Albert.S Picken remembers him eating lunch with them often and than retiring to his
hotel which he owned and lived in. He apparently died of a stroke and heart attack. Poppa also remembers bringing wood up
to his room to heat the old wood stove. The stove is now owned by Stanley.W Picken.
Here are a few photos of the exact spot
where the accident happened located on Hespeler
Rd or Hwy 24 however you wish as is the same road.
In the above photo, one can clearly see the bank the newspaper
article speaks of, it still stands fairly high, even though they had to lower it due to Wilhelmina accident .This would give
you an idea of what it was like for Ernest Smith coming up to the crossing.
Again, another angle of the bank which
supposedly was to blame, also here is Albert Picken's car!
Here is a picture of Alexander Picken,
son of Peter Picken, taken in front of his hotel on Queen St. in Hespeler Ontario, after the death of his wife, Albert
S. Picken is in this photo and that would make these taken roughly 1927-29.
Here is a photo, again in front of the
hotel, this time Agnes Picken, , the sister of Alexander, daughter of Peter Picken, is included with a very young and
curly headed fellow named Albert and his Grandfather , Alexander Picken. Queen St. Hespeler, Ontario
From what I was told by Poppa Bert, Picken
…. was that he remembers that his grandfather Alexander had a hotel called the “Robert Burns Hotel” in downtown
Hespeler, on Queen
St, where now stands a parking lot, located beside a bowling alley as of 2004.
He also remembers bringing tobacco to him
from the general store.
Here are 3 shots of what The Picken
Property as it was known once looked like, these photos are of the Hespeler Old Boys reunion, not sure of year I think 1923
but is before death of Alexander Picken.
The hotel is the 2 level building in front
of the car where all the people are watching the parade from.
The empty space across the road is now
a parking lot for the bowling alley. This used to be the site of the hotel, the Picken Property on Queen St, Hespeler,
Ontario. Poppa spent his first years there with his mother and father and his grandfather,
Alexander until his father Arthur purchased the lot across the street.
Where the hotel once stood, is now an empty parking lot on Queen St.
At end of driveway where bushes are stood
the house of Arthur Picken, where the car is parked once stood the house of Peter Henry Picken. Both houses were lost to fire.
You can still see the patio stone which would have been the entrance to Arthur’s house.
The photo above is in new Hope Cemetery,
Hespeler, Ontario, in the Picken plot.
Alexander Picken had the following children:
William, WHO WAS MARRIED TO CARRIE BROHMAN,
THE BROHMAN FAMILY WERE OWNERS OF THE BRESLAU
HOTEL
